Musicians/Band
biography
15 years on and WONDERboom are still rocking the crowds and the South African charts! It’s no small feat to be hailed as one of South Africa’s longest-lived rock bands.
WONDERboom have much to be proud of. They have released 8 albums, headlined every major SA festival, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award and People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands and came second worldwide, all while maintaining the level of music that audiences love.
There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Africa, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive and Best Side. The last of these, shot off their 7th album to the top of 5FM charts.
2009 marked the end of an era for the band with the departure of charismatic and sensational drummer, Danny de Wet. The band was at a crossroads and the change lead to some difficult decisions regarding the future. Faced with the daunting task of finding a replacement for the legendary de Wet’ shoes, the band turned to industry friend and peer, Garth McLeod. McLeod, who has more than earned his stripes as esteemed drummer of Sugardrive, Heroes Wear Red and Martin Rocka and the Sick Shop, accepted the offer without a moment’s hesitation, and the rest as they say…
With barely 5 gigs under their belts, the new WONDERboom hit the recording studios under the guidance, genius and creative backing of producer and Grammy award winner, Darryl Torr (also of Dear Reader fame). Tipped as their best album yet, Wonderboom’s 8th album, ‘The Automatic Shuffle’ promises not to disappoint! Keeping in integrity with the rock and roll style that made them famous, Automatic Shuffle introduces new electro - dance elements combined with British glam that keeps the listener on the edge of their seats the whole way through!
On The Radio, WONDERboom’s current single and music video, has had great response.
With a new sound and line-up, old and new fans have much to anticipate…and in true WONDERboom style, there is sure to be a few surprises in store.
